India Secures $1.17 Billion MH-60R Helicopter Deal, Boosting Defence Capabilities

The Biden administration formally notified Congress of its approval of a significant defence deal with India. The estimated $1.17 billion sale involved MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopter Equipment and associated systems that would enhance India’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency stated that the sale will help India counter today‘s as well as emerging threats effectively.This development comes as President Joe Biden’s term nears its end, with President-elect Donald Trump set to be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025.

Details of the Sale

Among these the requirement for India under the contract also features a procurement of 30 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems, Advanced data transfer systems, External Fuel tanks, AN/AAS 44C(V) Forward Looking Infrared system and Operator Machine Interface assistant with Spares Containers, facility Support and test equipment, Munition Integration, and Testing.

Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems shall act as the prime contractor under this agreement. This action will include temporary travel to India by up to 20 US government officials and 25 contractor representatives to provide technical support and oversight.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

This agreement represents a further step forward in the deepening defence cooperation between India and the US. Modernising India’s naval capabilities is compatible with both countries’ strategic interest in the preservation of stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
