Archbishop George Koovakad of India will be elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Francis, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) confirmed on Saturday, calling it a matter of great pride for the nation. India has sent a delegation, led by Union Minister George Kurian, to attend the ceremony in Vatican City.
The PMO expressed on X, “It is a matter of immense pride for India that Archbishop George Koovakad will be created as a Cardinal by His Holiness Pope Francis.”

Before the event, the Indian delegation met Pope Francis, with the PMO sharing a photo of the meeting.
Koovakad, 51, hailing from Kerala, has been organizing Pope Francis’ international tours since 2020. He will be among the 21 clergies to receive the cardinal title.
