Delhi: Roof Collapse Breaks Cooking Gas Pipeline, Injures Six Family Members

A roof collapse in a two-story house in the Shani Bazar area of outer north Delhi resulted in a fire and injuries to six family members on Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 7 am while the family was reportedly cooking, leading to both impact and burn injuries.

According to police, the Delhi Fire Services received a call about the fire and building collapse at 7:53 am. Fire chief Atul Garg confirmed that two fire tenders were dispatched to the scene immediately. The roof of a DDA Janta flat collapsed, breaking the PNG gas pipeline and igniting a fire that spread throughout the house.

At the time of the incident, Raju (40), his wife Rajeshwari (35), their son Rahul (18), and their three daughters—Mohini (12), Varsha (5), and Mahi (3)—were in the kitchen when the roof caved in, trapping them under the debris. Neighbors rushed to assist the injured before emergency services arrived.

Initially, eyewitnesses feared that a cylinder explosion had caused the collapse. However, after a thorough inspection, authorities confirmed that there was no blast involved.

The injured family members were transported to Raja Harishchandra Hospital for treatment. Medical staff reported that Raju suffered 52% burn injuries, Rajeshwari sustained 45%, and Rahul also had 45% burn injuries. Their daughters, Mohini, Varsha, and Mahi, sustained burn injuries of 50%, 6%, and 8%, respectively.

Further investigation into the incident is currently underway, according to police officials.
